Teaching About Social Justice: My Background and Context
As a high school Spanish teacher during the day and Advocacy Project coordinator after hours and on the weekends, I was able to volunteer in my community and encourage my students to do the same, all while practicing our Spanish language skills.
The inspiration for this project came from the increasing need for my students to be fluent in practical, immediately applicable Spanish, The Advocacy Project helped my students to get involved in their community and practice their language skills in a meaningful way.
Providing opportunities for students to volunteer in the community while speaking the target language is no small task. Here are some ideas to get you started.
To culminate "The Advocacy Project", students compose a 400-word, typed reflection in the target language describing their Advocacy Projects and their future volunteer endeavors.
